Step back 225 million years to when giant trees fell in rivers, were buried by sediment, and slowly transformed into stone through mineral replacement. Today these petrified logs lie scattered across a colorful badlands landscape painted in shades of red, pink, and white. The park also preserves over 600 archaeological sites and petroglyphs from ancestral Puebloan peoples, plus a section of historic Route 66. The 28-mile scenic drive connects short trails to petrified wood concentrations, ancient ruins, and sweeping desert vistas.
