Just east of Refugio, El Capitán features a long, sandy beach ideal for swimming, surfing, and beach combing. Coastal bluffs protect the park from Highway 101 noise, while El Capitán Creek winds through a wooded canyon with sycamores and oaks. The park offers over 130 campsites, many in a shaded grove away from the beach. Stairs lead down to the expansive beach, popular with families. Dolphins and whales pass by offshore, and low tide reveals fascinating tide pools. A paved bike trail connects to Refugio.
